Why Do You Need a Target List?

Type: Information Content

During the 1:1 calls, via Career Lab Coaching Membership (not offered any more, replaced with Career Accelerator Program) I asked job seekers the following questions:

  1. What is your target job title?
  2. Name 10 companies that offer your target jobs?
  3. Name dream companies that offer your target jobs?

Most of them were unable to give answers. Maybe they all listed top companies in their field. But, after 4 employers, I received blank stares.

How does that translate to your actual job search?

Just visualize and see how you were applying for a job vs how you will be applying for a job today?

  • Open the computer
  • Open job search site
  • Search for “some title”
  • Open jobs that interest you, apply and WAIT!

We want to eliminate the randomness. It takes discipline to create a plan and stick to it. Job Search is a slow and long process. On an average it takes 4 months to find a job! For International Students, add a few more months in Active Phase (the concept of Active vs Passive Phase is discussed in Depth in Career Lab).

Remember: Your First Day in the USA is the First Day of your Job Search.

You need to have defined targets with employers, types of jobs and job titles. Without specificity with this, can you imagine what you will be doing every day?

  • Open the computer
  • Open job search site
  • Search for “some title”
  • Open jobs that interest you, apply and WAIT!

I’m sure you probably agree that has to end. Random Job Search has to end. And this Challenge is going to help you create a High Impact and Effective Job Search Process.
